With over twenty years’ experience of teaching (in a former grammar school, in one of the first purpose-built comprehensives and in the first City Technology College) he pioneered GNVQ Science for 14-16 year olds. He is currently Chief Examiner for OCR for Foundation and Intermediate GNVQ in Science, and is Principal Examiner for the Forensic Science Unit.

He is a Consultant on the development of the Twenty-first Century Science qualification, and has been a Principal Examiner for OCR for an Applied Module for the course.

In addition, he has recently been Acting Subject Officer for OCR for the new A-level in Applied Science, and he is also a member of the working party for the development of the new science specifications for 2006.
